Foreword: By David Ward

Here is a short excerpt from Mark’s intro..

‘It’s late in the evening. I’m sitting here in my comfy chair. Small glass of whisky on the old occasional table by my side. The lustre of the walnut tabletop shining through the peaty whisky in the tumbler. The whisky is the Port Charlotte Islay Barley by the way. Just in case you’re the sort of person that likes to know the very last detail where whisky is involved. A bit like me in other words.

I’m supposed to be writing a few accompanying words to the book you’ve just opened. But instead, I’m looking down at the glass, drinking in those gorgeous tones. My brain working out how to capture this little moment in a picture. Was I always like this? Looking at everything in my life. And seeing the beauty in those little fleeting moments. That are here and gone in an instant. But remaining forever etched on the crumbling walls lining the dusty hallways of my mind. These pictures of kelp are a little like that.

I’ve never been one for projects. With long term photographic goals. In photographic terms I’m a simpleton. I see something I like, and I photograph it. But I always made my photographs in what I would call a ‘reactive’ way. I cut my teeth with a camera in a beautiful corner of Cumbria. A few miles from the Lakes and a few miles from the Eden Valley. I was surrounded by obvious beauty. I didn’t have to work at my craft. It was on my doorstep. Signed, sealed and delivered.’
