‘Forgotten Souls’ is a collection of images that explores the characters of Silver Birch trees.

There are several pockets of woodland where these remarkable trees can be found within the stunning landscapes of the Peak District. These areas, once industrialized and altered by human activity, have now been beautifully reclaimed by nature, allowing these resilient new pioneers of the woodland to thrive and flourish in their natural habitat.

Over a hundred years ago these places would have been a noisy hive of activity, people working and living on the land. Today, however, it is such a wonderfully tranquil location, feeling almost eerie and spiritual in nature; if you stand still for a moment, you might catch flickers of movement in the shadows cast by the ancient tree trunks. As you wander among them, you will undoubtedly find intriguing clues and remnants of the past that tell stories waiting to be discovered.

I imagine the memories and souls of these forgotten people are etched within these trees. The photographs I have taken over several years, across the various seasons, aim to capture and reveal these characters, serving as a mirror that looks back at history and reflects the stories that have long been lost to time. Through the photographs the woodland reveals moments of joy and magic, vividly coloured by the changing seasons throughout the year. It can also exhibit a darker and moodier side, appearing damp and mysterious, shrouded in shadows and whispers of nature's secrets.
